چکیده

a case in which a baby was not infected by breast milk from his EBOV-positive mother. However, it should be noted that the woman’s breast milk was never tested while she was breast-feeding baby 2. The literature on EBOV in breast milk of EBOV-positive patients is extremely scarce (3). In a previous study from the 2000 Sudan EBOV outbreak in Gulu, Uganda, breast milk from a convalescent-phase patient was sampled 15 days after symptom onset and tested positive for EBOV by RT-PCR and virus culture (4). Another study conducted in Guinea during the current outbreak, reported a mother– baby pair in which EVD developed in the baby 14 days after symptom onset in the mother, but breast milk from the mother sampled 17 days after symptom onset was negative by EBOV RT-PCR (1). It is unclear whether infectious virus or defective particles are being secreted in breast milk. Ct values were consistently lower in breast milk than in blood when tested concomitantly, but in this case, breast milk samples were not collected until day 6. Our findings suggest that breast milk is infected by EBOV at a later stage of the disease than blood but then follows the expected replication kinetics observed in venous blood. Considering the high EVD death rate, until further evidence is found, we recommend that EBOV-positive women stop breast-feeding immediately and that breast-feeding not be resumed until 2 negative RT-PCR tests of the breast milk have been confirmed. This suggestion is in line with the World Health Organization recommendation for testing semen in male EVD survivors (5). The public health risk for EBOV to remain in breast milk for at least 26 days after EVD symptom onset and for breast milk to possibly be infectious after a patient has cleared the virus from the blood should also be acknowledged.

Feline morbillivirus, a previously undescribed paramyxovirus associated with tubulointerstitial nephritis in domestic cats.

We describe the discovery and isolation of a paramyxovirus, feline morbillivirus (FmoPV), from domestic cat (Felis catus). FmoPV RNA was detected in 56 (12.3%) of 457 stray cats (53 urine, four rectal swabs, and one blood sample) by RT-PCR. Complete genome sequencing of three FmoPV strains showed genome sizes of 16,050 bases, the largest among morbilliviruses, because of unusually long 5' trail...

Epidemiological and pathological study of feline morbillivirus infection in domestic cats in Japan

BACKGROUND Feline morbillivirus (FmoPV) is a novel paramyxovirus found to infect domestic cats. FmoPV has been isolated in several countries in Asia and Europe and is considered to have genetic diversity. Also, it is suspected to be associated with feline renal diseases including tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN), which affects domestic cats with a high incidence rate. RESULTS To clarify the...

Rapid detection of feline morbillivirus by a reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification

Feline morbillivirus (FmoPV) is an emerging virus in domestic cats and considered to be one of the causes of chronic renal failure in cats. In this study, we established a reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay for the detection of FmoPV. The results indicated that the detection limit of the assay was 10 50% tissue culture infective dose (TCID50)/ml in the ...

Basic biological characterization of feline morbillivirus

Feline morbillivirus (FmoPV) is an emerging virus that was recently discovered in domestic cats with chronic nephritis. Despite the potential role of FmoPV in chronic nephritis, little is known about its biological characteristics. In this study, we established a quantitative assay of FmoPV by using an indirect immunofluorescence technique. Viral titers of FmoPV were determined in one week. Tre...

Antibody detection of feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) in sera of companion cats in Ahvaz, south west of Iran

Feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) is ubiquitous in domestic cats, especially in young cats and multi-cat environments. In the present study, a total of 248 companion cats of different ages were examined for serum antibody detection of FIPV by immunochromatography assay. The cats were selected from those referring to Veterinary Hospital of Ahvaz University, southwestern Iran from Decemb...

Genetic diversity of feline morbilliviruses isolated in Japan.

Feline morbillivirus (FmoPV) is an emerging virus in domestic cats and considered to be associated with tubulointerstitial nephritis. Although FmoPV was first described in China in 2012, there has been no report of the isolation of this virus in other countries. In this report, we describe the isolation and characterization of FmoPV from domestic cats in Japan. By using reverse transcription (R...
